Late summer evening walk down past the old clock tower

The bell chamber peels out to ring in the hour

Birch veneer delicacy lobster tray

And an orange sun setting on the bay

 

Rusted chain and anchor and salty seaweed smell

Sand dunes decorated with pebbles and seashells

Tall ships and fishing boats steer past hidden caves

Against the turbid ebb and flow of the battling waves

 

Far flung spray rises over the running tide

Granite teeth and crashing water against the quayside

I imagine all the stories the sea holds

All those years of ocean secrets untold

 

Stories of sleepy coves of pirate smugglers treks

Sunken treasure chests in the bow of old shipwrecks

Oil spillages and metal planes crash

Annual dumping of fourteen billion pounds of trash

 

The white cliff tops seem to touch the sky

Gyre of garbage waste debris to the seagulls cry

Floating plastics accumulating pollutants

Transporting worldwide through ocean currents

 

The deadly littering problem of the sea severe

Killing millions of marine animals each year

Pandemic face masks plague island mammal sanctuaries

Straws in turtles on beaches of coastal communities

 

I note as I stroll further along the sand

The water level has drowned out what once was land

The old houses that stood looking out to shore

Landmarks washed into the sea that stand no more

No sisters were closer than Jodie and Bobbie in their churchgoing childhood days

But teenage years drew them apart

They grew their separate ways

 

Both sisters differed feelings, visions and views on life

A clash of sexuality

Jodie stood for equality and diversity

Bobbie traditionality

 

One night there was a disagreement

Jodie and Bobbie had an awful fight

Jodie’s family objected to her life choices

Age gap, girl on girl, black on white

 

Bobbie alienated Jodie’s partner Shanika

Whilst their parents lived in fear

So Jodie outcast herself from the family

To avoid a bad atmosphere

 

No one knows how long in life we get

You should respect, accept, forgive and forget

Instead of waste those years

A few years passed as they lived their own lives

Bobbie watched her young son Terry grow

She ignored pleas to make up with Jodie and Shanika

Who Terry did not even know

 

Bobbie’s husband Barry was informed one day

In a shooting his own brother had died

They had argued and not spoken in over a year

Never made up ‘cause of selfish pride

 

Now, blood’s thicker than water

Bobbie could not sleep

A strange uneasiness inside

She drove to Jodie’s place

Along with their parents
